What
is a network? A computer network is a connection between two
or more devices (computers, printers, routers), whereby they can
exchange data to perform a task. These connections can be
physical connections or they can be wireless. A wireless network
connection is similar to your cordless phone. In fact,
certain wireless networks operate in the same frequency range as
your cordless phone.
What can you do with a network? Two or more computers can
share a single printer. They can share files without having
to save them to a floppy and carry it to the other computer. Multiple
networked computers can also share the same Internet connection.
Do you need a network, and if so, which type is right for you?
Well, that depends on what your needs are. If you need to connect
one or more computers in the same room to each other, or to the
same Internet connection, then a wired network will most likely
be the thing for you. If you have more than one desktop and
a laptop, then a mixture of both wired and wireless may be what
you need.
What equipment do you need to build a network? A basic two
computer wired network requires two network cards and a network
cable. If you want to share an internet connection between
two computers you’ll also need a router connected to your
Internet service provider. For a wireless network you would
need an access point or router with a built in access point.
In some instances a wireless network will be less expensive to install
than a wired network due to the labor involved in setting up the
wired infrastructure. Wireless networks are very flexible.
They allow the users to move their computers with little regard
to the network connections. Imagine being connected to the
Internet while sitting on the couch with your laptop and not having
network cable draped across the floor.
